1. Noosa Main Beach - Noosa Main Beach is the beach behind Hastings St. The waves here are rarely over one metre high but it’s a great place for a body-surf or a swim.
2. Noosa National Park - The coastline of the rocky headland that forms the centrepiece of Noosa National Park is interrupted by a number of small northerly facing bays. You will find some excellent surf spots as you move around the headland from the National Park car park, however, in the right conditions the waves tend to get larger and more powerful making some spots unsuitable for inexperienced surfers. The First Point has a perfect long-board break and on a medium sized swell it's perfect for beginners. Further round the headland you will come across Tea Tree Bay and Granite Bay, a local favourite, these smaller beaches provide good surfing in the right conditions.
3. Alexandria Bay - If you continue around the headland, you will come across beautiful Alexandria Bay. This is one of the nicer sandy beaches in Noosa and it doesn't get as busy as Main Beach in peak season.
4. Sunshine Beach - Sunshine Beach is located just south of Noosa National Park. It is an open beach, at times quite dangerous but can have cracking surf.
Away from the surf the Noosa River caters for all kinds of water sports. Best to drive up to Noosaville where all of the following are located although you can walk it from Hastings St if you’re keen.
1. Kayaking - Kayaking on the river is safe and pretty cruisey especially in the areas around the back of the park. Hires available at Kayak Noosa, Jetty 17/248 Gympie Tce, Noosaville, Ph 0448 567321.
2. Boating - Fishing in the river is popular as is jet skiing. Both are available from:
O Boat Hire Noosa large range of self-drive boats. Central on the Noosa River behind the Tennis Court. Book a group and pay approx. $3.50 = $5.00 p/person p/hour Ph: (07) 5449 7513
U Drive Boat Hire. 256 Gympie terrace Noosaville, Ph: 5449 9248
1. Eumundi Market - The famous Eumundi market operates every Saturday and Wednesday morning. Well worth a look. Either drive out or catch a regular bus that operates from Noosa to Eumundi.
2. Laguna Hill Lookout - Drive or walk up to the Laguna Hill lookout for a superb view of Noosa and the surrounding country. Follow to the end of Viewland Drive, which is off Noosa Drive to the car park at the lookout.
3. Mooloolaba Fish Markets - About an hour or so down the coast from Noosa is the holiday town of Mooloolaba. It’s a bit more modest than flashy Noosa BUT it is the centre of the Sunshine Coast fishing industry. Fresh prawns and a beer on the deck at the Co-op is hard to beat. Situated on ‘The Spit’ at Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba, Ph: 5452 4611
The first question many travellers’ may have is this: What is flashpacking?
Well, a key element of flashpacking is the love of independent travel. This is a sensibility obviously carried over from the backpacking movement, which combines the thirst for independent travel with a meagre budget. I think we’d all agree that travelling is about expanding your horizons, opening your mind to new things and looking differently at the world. It’s not about the stuff you carry. If your spirit is the same, the amount of flash with you does not matter.
